Opening Moves

🗓️ January–February 2025
The inaugural edition of The Thinker’s Journal marked the beginning of a new publication dedicated to documenting chess life in Wales.
Launched with the West Wales Chess League as its focal point, the first issue set out to capture the energy, stories, and personalities surrounding local competitive chess. From tournament halls to club nights, the aim was simple: to create a record of the games being played, the people behind them, and the communities keeping the board alive.
Inside this launch edition:
♟ 55th West Wales Congress
Coverage of one of the region’s most established tournaments, featuring standout performances and memorable moments from the event.
♟ Club Origins
A look at the roots of local chess clubs and the individuals who helped establish and sustain them.
♟ Junior Game of the Month

♟ League and Community Notes
Updates and observations from across the West Wales chess scene.
While Issue 1 focused primarily on West Wales, the response to the magazine quickly revealed something bigger: a strong appetite for a publication celebrating chess across the entire country.
Beginning with Issue 2, the scope of The Thinker’s Journal expanded to cover all of Wales, bringing together stories, tournaments, players, and clubs from across the national chess community.
What started as a local initiative had already begun its evolution into a national chronicle of Welsh chess.
